Historical Society is seeking a skilled and dedicated Maintenance
Specialist to ensure the functionality of the Nebraska History
Museum and assist at our facilities as needed. Under the
supervision and assistance from our Facility Manager, you'll ensure
our buildings are safe, well-maintained, and welcoming for visitors
and staff alike. Your responsibilities will include surveying and
repairing mechanical systems, maintaining electrical and HVAC
systems, performing manual repairs, and overseeing general upkeep.

routine inspections of museum buildings, galleries, and mechanical
systems to ensure safe, efficient, and preservation appropriate
operation. Perform general maintenance and minor repairs on
electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and structural elements while following
museum conservation guidelines. Operate and monitor computerized
systems, including Building Management Systems (BMS), to track
environmental conditions, energy usage, and equipment performance.
Complete building repairs such as doors, locks, display fixtures,
drywall, painting, and basic carpentry to support gallery and
facility upkeep. Assist with exhibit installation and
deinstallation, preparing spaces and supporting logistical needs.
Coordinate with curatorial, exhibits, and operations staff to
maintain safe, functional, and visitor ready public spaces. Support
museum events and programs by ensuring proper facility setup and
ongoing maintenance. Perform seasonal and exterior maintenance,
including landscaping and snow removal. Travel to historic sites,
off-site facilities, and outreach locations as required. Perform
other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification.
Requirements and Qualifications Minimum Qualifications : Associates
degree or equivalent vocational education in construction,
industrial engineering, HVAC, welding, or other building trade.
Experience in building maintenance, a mechanical trade, or
performing safety inspections, investigations or training may be
substituted for education on a year-for-year basis as determined
appropriate by the agency. Preferred: Specialized training or
hands-on experience with HVAC environmental control systems.
Experience with Building Management Systems (BMS) or other facility
automation platforms. Electrical, carpentry, or drywall repair
experience. Experience working in a museum, cultural institution,
or historic site. Customer service experience in visitor centered
environments. Other: This position requires travel. As such, the
incumbent must be able to present a valid driver’s license or
another form of reliable transportation. Regular and Reliable
attendance is required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working
knowledge of electrical , HVAC , plumbing , and general building
maintenance systems , including environmental controls for
collections care. Ability to operate maintenance software and
computerized monitoring systems such as BMS. Proficiency with hand
tools, diagnostic equipment , and standard trade practices.
Understanding of safety procedures in public facilities and the
ability to respond effectively during emergencies . Strong
interpersonal and communication skills for working with staff,
visitors , vendors , and contractors. Effective problem solving and
troubleshooting abilities. Strong time management skills with the
ability to prioritize and adapt to changing facility needs. Ability
to work collaboratively in a team oriented, service focused
environment. Ability and willingness to travel to support off-site
